Great movie about the Blues (and a great gift for Christmas) - Full Moon Lightning

Today I want to tell you about a absolute brilliant movie, about the Blues, called "Full Moon Lightning".
It´s the remarkable movie about two Blues men. One left the south in an early age and now with 75 he tries to find out about his family and his roots. The other one, his "Blues son" is suffering because his girlfriend got cancer. Both men found healing in the Blues and the movie travels to the South, shows the sad moments and the healing process that happened. This DVD, I can honestly say is a real peace of art and a wonderful movie about the Blues. On the website below you can order it (to a real good price) and there´s a speciale edition with bonus CD with the music of Bluesman Floyd Lee!

Before Leo Fender and Les Paul made guitars in serial productions, musicans in 1920s and 30s in America made their own guitars of a cigarbox, a stick and some wire. Over the years these cigarbox guitars were getting better and better and they became the guitar for the poor black population.

Accidently I found out, that these kind of guitars are still very popular and a lot of amateurs and professionals still building these guitars. A lot of them made with only 3 or 4 strings and are often used with an Open-Tuning for slide guitar (playing with a bottleneck). A chord consits of 3 notes, so a guitar with 3 strings is enough for easy playing. Only a few producers make Cigarbox guitars with 6 strings. These kind a guitars were starting to fascinating me. Unfortunatly I don´t have any technical skills. If so, I would have started to build my own Cigarbox guitar with one of the instructions that are available on the internet.

The company which produces the most professional Cigarbox guitars is Daddy Mojo (www.daddy-mojo.com ) from Canada. They have the biggest
selection of Cigarbox guitars with 3, 4 or 6 strings. I ordered a deluxe version with 6 strings and this is my review of it:

The guitar made an excellent impression. I took a wood box without decals. It´s a box special made for Daddy Mojo, as you can see on the pictures and the branding on the side of the guitar. The box is glued, so you can´t open it (unfortuantly, because I´m really curious to see how they build it on the inside). But if the box wouldn´t be glued it would easily pop out while you´re playing so it´s reasonable why they did this. The guitar has a humbucker pick-up and I was really curious how the guitar sounds.

Without an amp it sound like a little more quit acoustic guitar which is perfect when you have sensitive neighbours or family members. Plugged into an amp the clean sound of the guitar sounds more like a western guitar and has much more volume then I have expected. The guitar sounds great with some overdrive/distortion too, but like all guitars with an open body you might have some feedback when you play it real loud or with too much overdrive or too near your amp. Generally you have the feeling of a piece of musical history in your hands and you can really imagine how people like Blind Willie Johnson started their musical career with a guitar like this. So if you´re looking for something special for your guitar collection, for a piece of musical history in your hands or just for a nice, small guitar, you have to check out the website of Daddy Mojo (www.daddy-mojo.com ). On their website you´ll find some videos and sound examples and their wide range of Cigarbox guitars. Check it out!

And you get all the great little storys by Bill Wyman how played and recorded with the Who-is-who of Blues artists. This book is as well a must-have in your bookshelf when you´re a Blues fan. In tough times like these, with war, terrorism and cold capitalism, even musicians won´t stay quite anymore.

Even when a lot of musicians are rather stay unpolitical, some musicans won´t keep their mouths shut anymore. They express their feelings and opinions through their music and they want to set a mark.

Rich Man´s War - New Blues & Roots Songs of Peace & Protest is the first sampler of this kind in the new century. With artiss like Guitar Shorty, Bob Brozman, Michael Hill, Eddy "The Chief" Clearwarter and others this CD has different music styles from Blues, Country and Roots music. And this compilation of styles and the lyrics made this CD so special! A CD really worth listening to!

Wow, this CD really got me. Carolyn Wonderland from Texas has a voice which reminds you on a tender Janis Joplin. Her music is a really great mixture of (Texas)Blues, Country and Roots/Folkmusicl

Her CD was produzed by the 9th time grammy winner Ray Benson. Carolyn Wonderland played live with Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter and won a lot of awards at the Housten Press Awards. And her CD proofes it right. Her voice, her guitar playing and her songwriting qualities made this CD really special. Check it out!!

And on this live CD set with 3 CDs (!!!) he can really show what he´s got. His great voice and guitar playing didn´t leave any doubts that Germany too has great young Blues talents.

On the 3 CDs (the 3rd is a "bootleg" with various recordings from several live gigs) he has songs from his previous CDs and some classic Jimi Hendrix tunes as well.

So for a fair price you´ll get a 3 CD package filled with great Blues songs with great musicians and their live performances. Check it out!

B.B. King - Blues Summit - CD Review

Posted by: admin in Blues CDs on

Lets talk about a great B.B. King CD - Blues Summit

I don´t need to mention that B.B. King has an extraoderinary Band and a perfect CD production. You always know what you´ll get for your money. But he always features special themes, special Blues styles in his work.

For Blues summit he has the support from Blues legends like Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Etta James, Albert Collins and John Lee Hooker.

There are no players from the younger Blues generation on this CD, but these artists really fit to the style of B.B. King and they made this a special CD. We have classics like Stormy Monday and I pitty the fool on this CD and the duett with Katie Webster "Since I met you baby" is really a highlight on this CD.

If you don´t have this CD in your Blues collection, don´t hesitate to change this. If you listen to it, you´ll know why!
